Woman dead after hit-and-run in west Phoenix

PHOENIX — A woman is dead after a hit-and-run in west Phoenix on Friday morning, authorities said.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, officers responded to 43rd and Orangewood avenues for reports of a collision involving a pedestrian around 11:47 a.m.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found 75-year-old Maria Leal in critical condition. Leal was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Preliminary information indicates Leal was trying to enter the passenger side of a parked vehicle on the north side of the road.

While one vehicle slowed down to give her room, a second vehicle tried to pass both by driving between the two vehicles and hit Leal, authorities said.

The passing vehicle did not stop and fled the scene.
