When police arrived at the scene, they found a toddler suffering from what appeared to be gunshot wounds.

According to MCAO, Cortez fired a rifle into a home in the area where her ex-boyfriend was visiting and struck a 4-year-old boy who was inside in the face.

The toddler was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.

Police determined on Jan. 7 that it was Cortez who shot the boy and contacted her to arrange her surrender before she was booked into jail.
