PHOENIX – Rebounding after a COVID-depressed year, the 2022 WM Phoenix Open raised $10.5 million for Arizona charities, The Thunderbirds announced Wednesday.

It was the fifth time in the last six years the Valley’s annual PGA Tour stop generated more than $10 million for charity.

The total dipped to $3.85 million in 2021, when attendance and activities were limited because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are extraordinarily proud of the $10 million raised for Arizona charities during a major bounce-back year for us, which positively shows the commitment and togetherness of WM and the PGA Tour, as well as our incredible fans, sponsors and volunteers,” Michael Golding, president of The Thunderbirds, said in a press release.

The 2022 amount was announced at Hospice of the Valley’s new Dementia Care and Education Campus, which received a $150,000 grant.

The Thunderbirds are the nonprofit organization formed in 1986 to distribute charity funds raised through the WM Phoenix Open.

The golf tournament has raised more than $187 million in its 87-year history, including about $110 million since 2010, when WM became the title sponsor.

The 2023 WM Phoenix Open is set for Feb. 6-12 at TPC Scottsdale.
