Pocket Fire north of Sedona nears 5,600 acres, size more than doubles overnight

The Pocket Fire north of Sedona grew significantly overnight, and crews battling the blaze are facing the prospect of increasingly difficult weather conditions, officials said.

The size of the blaze was reported at 5,547 acres with 0% containment in the Forest Service’s Sunday morning update. That was an increase of about 3,200 acres from Saturday evening, as winds continued to push the flames further northeast along Woody Mountain Road (Forest Road 231).

“GO” evacuation orders for residents in Oak Creek Canyon, zones 14 and 15, have been changed to “SET” status. Proof of residency is required to enter the area, while residents and business owners still need to be prepared to evacuate should fire behavior or weather conditions change.

Residents in Kachina Village, Forest Highlands and Pine Del 99 on Sunday were placed under “SET” status, which means residents need to stay alert and be aware of danger.

Evacuation orders downgraded as Spring Fire near Flagstaff grows to more than 100 acres

Evacuation orders for residents in the Kendrick Mountain area near Flagstaff for the Spring Fire were downgraded Sunday afternoon.

The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office around noon returned the Pumpkin Center 141 zone to “SET” status, meaning residents should be aware of significant danger and potential evacuation orders. People in the area were previously placed on “GO” evacuation status around 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The blaze is burning along Spring Valley Road in the Parks area on private land near Pumpkin Center. The Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management (DFFM) noted that it was being fueled by ponderosa, pinion, grass and brush.

The fire was estimated at 112 acres with 0% containment on Sunday morning. It was determined to be human caused, but what exactly ignited the blaze was still under investigation.

Containment of Sycamore Fire, Arizona’s largest active wildfire, remains same as weather worsens

Containment of the Sycamore Fire north of Globe, Arizona’s largest active wildfire, remained the same on Sunday morning as the blaze saw minor growth during dangerous weather conditions in the area.

The fire’s size grew from 11,859 acres Saturday morning to 11,879 acres Sunday morning with containment holding at 37%, according to the latest incident management update.

With high temperatures, strong winds and low humidity in the forecast, a Red Flag Warning is in effect Friday through Sunday. Adding to the fire risk, isolated afternoon thunderstorms could produce lightning and potent wind gusts.

Five freeways, one busy weekend: Major road closures stretch from Chandler to North Phoenix

As you head into the weekend, roadwork across the Valley is set to affect your travel plans.

Construction projects will shut down or restrict lanes on State Route 51, Loop 101 Pima Freeway, Loop 202 Santan Freeway, US 60 Superstition Freeway and Loop 303, the Arizona Department of Transportation said.

The traffic authority broke down the different closures in its weekend travel advisory for June 26 to 29.

Phoenix police find man, woman fatally shot

Two people were found dead Friday afternoon after a shooting in Phoenix, police said.

Phoenix Police officers responded to reports of shots fired near 99th Avenue and Camelback Road just before 4:00 p.m.

Police found a man and woman with gunshot wounds. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
