9 injured in Tucson mass shooting, police shoot suspect fleeing scene

Ten people were injured in a mass shooting early Sunday morning in Tucson, including a fleeing suspect who was shot by police, authorities said.

The initial shooting occurred around 2 a.m. near the 100 block of East Congress Street, which is one block away from the James A. Walsh Federal Courthouse.

Patrol officers in the area responded to the incident on foot and found the male suspect fleeing the scene.

After police gave multiple commands, an officer shot the suspect, authorities said.

Storms fail to live up to expectations, but parts of metro Phoenix get doused

Monsoon thunderstorms that developed around the Valley late Thursday and early Friday were not as widespread as expected, but some areas got a good soaking.

The heaviest pockets, with over an inch of rainfall, were in Mesa, Apache Junction, Scottsdale and Fountain Hills. The storm activity triggered a series of flash flood warnings that expired overnight.

Totals of at least 0.5 inches were prevalent across the east and northeast Valley, while the west side had lighter activity.

“We thought that we would see showers all throughout the Valley. But, this is more of an east-northeast Valley rain,” ABC15 meteorologist Ashlee DeMartino told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Friday morning.

Dead infant found in Phoenix apartment after mother goes to hospital

A woman went to a Phoenix hospital Thursday and told staff she had given birth at her apartment that morning and that the baby was still there, according to Phoenix police.

Officers forced their way into the apartment near Hatcher Road and 7th Street. Inside, they found an unresponsive infant who was pronounced dead by Phoenix Fire crews.

No one else was inside the apartment, according to authorities.

Allegiant flight forced to return to Mesa Gateway Airport after bird strike

Passengers on an Allegiant flight out of Mesa Gateway Airport had a somewhat scary experience Saturday afternoon when a bird strike took place shortly after takeoff.

The flight departed for Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport around 3:28 p.m. and returned to the Mesa airport after the strike, according to an Allegiant spokesperson.

They told KTAR News 92.3 FM the flight landed normally and was able to taxi to the gate under its own power. They added that passengers deplaned normally and a replacement aircraft was sent.

Suspect killed by Chandler police while fleeing arrest in Tempe

Chandler detectives shot and killed a man who allegedly took out a firearm while fleeing arrest in Tempe on Friday, authorities said.

The detectives believed the suspect was involved in an aggravated assault in Chandler two weeks before.

The attempted arrest came shortly before 8 p.m., at which point the suspect fled on foot to an apartment complex near Scottsdale and McKellips roads, according to the Chandler Police Department.
