Dead infant found in Phoenix apartment after mother goes to hospital

Officers responded to a report of an injured person and found the unresponsive infant. There are no signs of foul play and no suspects are being pursued.

A woman went to a Phoenix hospital Thursday and told staff she had given birth at her apartment that morning and that the baby was still there, according to Phoenix police.

Officers forced their way into the apartment near Hatcher Road and 7th Street. Inside, they found an unresponsive infant who was pronounced dead by Phoenix Fire crews.

No one else was inside the apartment, according to authorities.

Preliminary information indicates the woman was approximately five months pregnant when she gave birth. The cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner.

No arrests have been made and the investigation remains ongoing.
