Weekend freeway advisory for metro Phoenix includes major detour on Interstate 17

PHOENIX – Metro Phoenix residents who head north to escape the heat this weekend will have to maneuver their way around a major detour on Interstate 17.

Valley drivers also will have to watch for a closure in the East Valley and lane restrictions near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation’s weekend freeway travel advisory for June 7-10.

Starting with the I-17 situation, the northbound freeway will be closed from Happy Valley Road to Loop 303 in north Phoenix from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for the final phase of a pavement improvement project. The northbound I-17 on-ramps at Deer Valley and Pinnacle Peak roads will be out of commission during the closure.

If possible, motorists should plan routes to connect with northbound I-17 at or north of Loop 303.

But for travelers on I-17, ADOT strongly recommends taking westbound Happy Valley Road to northbound Lake Pleasant Parkway to eastbound Loop 303 to bypass the closure and reconnect with northbound I-17.

While that detour requires about 20 miles to cover what would be 4 miles of I-17, ADOT says using local streets as alternate routes will only lead to longer delays and inconveniences throughout the area.

Beyond Interstate 17, what Valley freeways are restricted this weekend?

Over in the East Valley, the northbound Loop 101 Price Freeway will be closed from Warner Road to US 60 (Superstition Freeway) from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for pavement work. The northbound Loop 101 on-ramps at Price Road, Chandler Boulevard and Ray Road will be closed at the same time.

And as usual these days, work on the I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project will disrupt traffic near the Phoenix/Tempe border.

I-10 will be narrowed to two lanes each way between Broadway Road and 48th Street/State Route 143 near Sky Harbor from 10 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday for bridge work. The westbound I-10 on-ramp at Broadway Road, southbound SR 143 on-ramp at University Drive and westbound US 60 HOV ramp to westbound I-10 will all be closed, too.

The $775 million Broadway Curve Improvement Project is remaking 11 miles of I-10 to reduce travel times during peak hours, improve airport access, support transit options and prepare the region for future growth.

All times are subject to change. Roadways could reopen ahead of schedule as work is completed.
