Valley Metro cuts light rail service in response to coronavirus outbreak

PHOENIX – Valley Metro announced Wednesday it will reduce its light rail service starting this weekend in response to the coronavirus outbreak.

Beginning Saturday, trains will run on the same daily schedule Mondays-Saturdays, with departures every 15 minutes from 4 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Sunday schedule isn’t changing.

The light rail will operate from 4 a.m. to 1:30 a.m., with the last trips beginning at 11 p.m. The Friday and Saturday late night service is being suspended.

Starting Saturday, April 11, light rail will be on an adjusted schedule Monday-Saturday.

Valley Metro also announced that the Peoria on the Go bus service will be suspended starting Thursday.

The Phoenix-area mass transit system already reduced trips on its Express and RAPID bus routes until further notice.

In addition, Phoenix will be restricting ridership on city bus routes starting Monday. City circulators (ALEX, MARY, SMART) will be limited to five passengers, regular 40-foot buses will be limited to 10 passengers and the flexible 60-foot buses will be limited to 15 passengers.

As preventative measures, Valley Metro riders already have been boarding buses at the rear, and seats near the driver have been blocked off.

Valley Metro has been asking passengers to limit mass transit use to essential trips. Riders should follow 6-foot social distancing guidelines and to stay home if they are feeling sick.

Last week, Valley Metro announced that a bus driver who last worked March 21 tested positive for COVID-19.

As a matter of privacy, no details about the driver’s routes were released.
