The extension adds stations at Stapley Drive and Gilbert Road and a park-and-ride and transit center at Gilbert Road and Main Street.
With the addition, the Valley Metro light rail system expands to 28 miles and 38 stations.
In April, the transit agency used 66 tons of water bottles to weigh down light rail cars to test them on the extension.
After the testing was complete, Valley Metro donated more than 115,000 bottles of water to United Food Bank to distribute over the summer.
