PHOENIX — Residents of the Phoenix metropolitan area will be able to use public transportation more easily to travel between Scottsdale and Tempe, due to a new service expansion from Valley Metro.

According to a recent press release, the transportation company announced it will be expanding bus frequency on Route 72 between Tempe Transportation Center and Camelback Road. Buses will run every 10 minutes from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays starting on April 25.

Valley Metro Board Treasurer Suzanne Klapp said in the release that the expansion will increase the number of visitors traveling to “key” destinations in Scottsdale and Tempe.

“The improved frequency of Route 72 will connect riders to key destinations such as ASU Tempe, ASU SkySong and Scottsdale Fashion Square,” the release read. “The increased frequency will also provide improved connection to Valley Metro Rail for downtown Scottsdale and north Tempe residents.”

In addition to the increased bus frequencies, Valley Metro will add a new route, Route 32, which will provide service from Camelback Road to the 44th Street/Washington light rail station.

These changes will be a part of the newest round of service improvements ahead of another beginning in October. The next round of improvements will expand hours and frequency of bus routes in Phoenix.

Maria Hyatt, City of Phoenix public transit director, said in the release that 44 Phoenix bus routes will expand its hours of service and increase frequency to a “minimum” of 30 minutes.

“The addition of Route 32 is the first expansion of bus service since the residents of Phoenix approved the T2050 plan, but this is just the beginning,” the release read.

Valley Metro bus drivers brought the city to a halt in January, after a week-long bus strike occurred over contract negotiations.
