PHOENIX — An Arizona couple vacationing in Ireland were killed in a freak accident when the horse-drawn carriage they were riding in plunged off a mountainous road.

The Irish Mirror reported that Normand Larose and Rosalyn Few of Phoenix died Monday at Gap of Dunloe in County Kerry.

The horse startled and bolted from the road, dropping the coach about 20 feet into a ravine. The driver survived, suffering minor injuries. The horse had to be put down.

Larose, 62, and Few, 64, were traveling with family who were in another carriage a few minutes behind them. The family didn’t see the accident at the popular tourist spot near Killarney.

“We saw it go off the edge. It was so, so terrible. I climbed down and helped lift the cart off the man and woman,” Stewart Ainsley, a witness told the newspaper.

Gerry Christie of the Kerry Mountain Rescue told the Irish Times it took about an hour to recover the bodies.

Larose’s niece, Maude, told the Mirror her uncle “was a very happy person, who loved life very much. He always took care of the people he loved.”
