U.S. marshals arrest Los Angeles murder suspect in Chandler

A Los Angeles murder suspect was arrested in the East Valley last week following a joint effort by federal and local law enforcement, authorities announced.

George Nunez, 26, was taken into custody in Chandler on Aug. 6 by the U.S. Marshals Service-led Arizona WANTED Violent Offender Task Force and the Pacific Southwest Regional Fugitive Task Force.

Nunez was wanted by the Los Angeles Police Department in connection with a homicide in the LA area in June.

After the June homicide, the Pacific Southwest Regional Fugitive Task Force took over the fugitive investigation and tracked information suggesting Nunez had fled California for Arizona. The team then called on Arizona’s task force to help track him down.

On Aug. 6, investigators set up surveillance at a Chandler residence and spotted Nunez coming and going from the property.

Officers surrounded the home and ordered Nunez to surrender.

After several announcements, Nunez stepped outside and was taken into custody without further incident.

“Crossing state lines does not end our pursuit,” United States Marshal Van Bayless said in a release. “This arrest demonstrates the reach of the U.S. Marshals Service and the strength of the partnerships that allow law enforcement agencies across the country to work as one.”

Bayless added that he hopes the arrest “provides some measure of comfort to the victim’s loved ones.”

Nunez was booked into the Maricopa County Jail, where he is being held while awaiting extradition back to Los Angeles to face charges.
