PHOENIX — One of the state’s busiest freeways, Interstate 10 will be getting a major facelift next year on the southern portion that runs through Tucson.
Plans call for the expansion and widening of the I-10 between the four-mile stretch at Ina and Ruthrauff roads and reconstructing the interchanges at both Orange Grove and Sunset roads, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
The upgraded interchanges will include larger entrance and exit ramps to improve the flow of traffic, along with building additional lanes on the I-10 making it a four-lane freeway in both directions.
ADOT anticipates that the $171 million project will be completed midway through 2025 when the opening of the Sunset Road interchange is completed. The interchange will allow for drivers to connect to River Road using a bridge that will help move traffic over railroad tracks near Rillito River.
What’s next for the I-10 project in Tucson?
Another phase of the 2025 reconstruction project will be on the I-10 portion that runs through Kino Parkway and Country Club Road that will expand it from two to three lanes in some areas and will expand it to four lanes west of Kino Parkway.
Alvernon Way is an exit ramp between Kino Parkway and Country Club Road that will also be remodeled as it connects with the Kino Sports Complex, which is the largest sports venue in Tucson.
The $600 million construction project is scheduled to begin midway in 2025 and completion is set for 2028.
As construction takes place there will be three lanes of traffic through work zones during daytime hours and accessibility to businesses in the area. For more information on the I-10 expansion project go to azdot.gov/i10ina2ruthrauff.
