Tucson city councilwoman wins Democratic primary for mayor

PHOENIX – It’s looking like Arizona’s two largest cities will soon have female mayors.

Tucson voters picked Regina Romero as the Democratic nominee Tuesday, a big step for the three-term city councilwoman in the mayoral race in the state’s second-largest city.

Romero wound up with 49.5% of the vote in a three-way race, handily defeating former state lawmaker Steve Farley (37.7%) and real estate developer Randi Dorman (12.5%).

In 2018, Farley unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic nomination in the race for governor of Arizona.

Because the Republican Party did not field a candidate in the Democratic stronghold, Romero’s only opponent on the November ballot will be independent Ed Ackerley.

If Romero defeats Ackerley, she would be the first woman elected as Tucson’s mayor.

Earlier this year, Kate Gallego became the third female mayor of Phoenix, Arizona’s largest city.
