Father arrested after toddler accidentally shoots self in west Phoenix

PHOENIX – The father of a toddler who suffered an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound in Phoenix on Wednesday night has been arrested, authorities said.

Oscar Guerra, 27, was booked into jail on one felony count of child abuse, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

Officers responded to the area of 84th and Campbell avenues, between Camelback and Indian School roads, around 10:40 p.m. and found the child with a gunshot wound.

The toddler was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries that aren’t considered life-threatening. Police didn’t provide the child’s age.

How was toddler injured in shooting incident?

“This investigation has revealed that the toddler found the gun within the home and accidently shot themselves,” Sgt. Rob Scherer said in a media advisory on Thursday.

Guerra was arrested after police determined he left the gun in a place where the child could access it.

No other details were made available. The police investigation is ongoing.

The Department of Child Safety is also investigating the situation.
