Tips for Arizonans traveling through Phoenix Sky Harbor for Memorial Day, summer

Memorial Day weekend unofficially kicks off the summer travel season, and Phoenix Sky Harbor officials are giving Arizonans tips to make it as stress-free as possible.

The pieces of advice come from the airport’s navigator volunteers, according to a news release. They can be found wearing purple vests around the airport and provide passengers with directions, information and assistance.

They echoed common travel tips, such as arriving two hours before domestic flights and three hours prior when traveling internationally. Additionally, Arizonans were told to check the status of their flight and security checkpoint wait times, which can be viewed the airport’s website, before leaving their house.

Something airport goers might not know is that they can reserve their spot in line a security up to six days in advance using PHX RESERVE, which is free.

Another way Arizonans can prevent getting stuck at security is to ensure they have a REAL ID-compliant licenses, state IDs or other accepted forms of identification. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has started charging a $45 fee for those who do not have a REAL ID.

For travelers who are planning to leave their car at the airport while on their trip, it was recommended to check parking availability and reserve a spot ahead of time. It was noted that even with a reservations, people should give themselves extra time to get into the parking lot and find their spot.

When getting picked up, visitors and residents can use the PHX Sky Train 24th Street or 44th Street to avoid congestion in the terminal and roadways around the airport. There are also three cell phone lots that Arizonans can wait in when picking others up.

Additionally, people who are using the PHX Sky Train to get to the terminals rather than leave are able to drop off checked bags at the Rental Car Center or East Economy Parking Lot. It is important to note they have to be flying on participating domestic airlines and any baggage fees will still apply.

The airport also offers Compassion Cacti lanyards for caregivers and travelers with special needs upon request. The lanyards indicate to airport staff that the passenger may need extra time or assistance. There are also navigator guides that airport goers can schedule to provide extra support through the travel process.

In addition, Sky Harbor has a new artificial intelligence assistant called “Amelia,” which is available on its website’s homepage, that can provide answers on questions regarding amenities, services, shops and parking.
