The Mexicano, Maggiore Group’s latest creation, set to open in Phoenix

PHOENIX – The minds behind Hash Kitchen, The Sicilian Butcher and The Sicilian Baker are ready to serve up a new concept in Phoenix: The Mexicano.

The Maggiore Group plans to debut its spin on Mexican cuisine Wednesday on Cactus Road near Tatum Boulevard, in the former Salty Sow location.

With service starting at 4 p.m., the first 100 diners on opening night will be entered into a drawing for a $1,000 gift card good at any Maggiore Group restaurant.

The Mexicano will be open for dinner the first week and add lunch hours the following week.

Chef Joey Maggiore’s menu ranges from classic to contemporary Mexican fare, with shareable offerings such as grouper ceviche in a coconut shell, fajitas on sizzling lava stones and 36-inch quesadillas.

The bar will feature a selection of tequila, mezcal, margaritas, beer, wine and agave-based cocktails.

Don’t expect a mellow dining experience. The Mexicano will have DJs on weekends, a donkey cart with a tequila ice luge and a churro cart.

There will also be a unique build-your-own Michelada bar, where patrons can choose from a selection of infused tequilas and draft beers plus more than 40 toppings, including oysters, shrimp cocktail and habañero cheese.

The restaurant has a Mexico City-inspired design with a 5,500-square-foot indoor space plus a 2,800-square-foot patio with room for 300 diners.

It’s been a busy time for The Maggiore Group. Fueled by a multimillion-dollar outside investment, the Scottsdale-based company recently announced plans to expand brunch concept Hash Kitchen into Colorado, Texas and Utah.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The Mexicano originally announced it would open Monday, Dec. 7, but the restaurant said on Dec. 3 it had to delay plans by two days because of unforeseen supply chain issues.
