Tempe Public Library goes fine-free on overdue books

PHOENIX – Tempe joined a handful of other Arizona cities Monday in stamping out fines for overdue library materials.

The Tempe Public Library announced the fine-free decision had begun, saying a person’s inability to pay a fine shouldn’t be an obstacle to getting information.

“Tempe Public Library is committed to providing free and equitable access to resources for all residents and community members,” Jessica Jupitus, deputy director of the library said in a press release.

“Our fine-free policy makes that access possible, ensuring that library materials are always available to those who need them most.”

The East Valley city cited studies they said showed fine-free libraries were more likely to see improvement in the return of checked-out material and even more card sign-ups.

Users will be still be charged the price of a replacement copy if the items aren’t returned within 14 days past the due date, in keeping with a policy already in place.

The library also increased the single-checkout limit on loaned items to 30, including DVDs and CDs. Previously the limit on that type of media was 10.

Tempe joins Phoenix and Scottsdale public libraries in closing the book on overdue fines.

The Maricopa County Library system also eliminated overdue fees.
