Chandler library damaged in August explosion set to reopen

PHOENIX — A Chandler library will fully reopen next week more than five months after it was damaged by a massive explosion at a nearby business, the city said.

When Sunset Library returns to full service on Monday, it will be open Mondays through Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursdays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The branch located in the strip mall on the northeast corner of Ray and Rural roads has offered hold pickups and book drop access since September, the city said in a press release.

Authorities determined an unintentional natural gas leak at Platinum Printing on Aug. 26 caused the explosion that destroyed the business and damaged surrounding structures, including the library.

A witness told ABC15 he heard and felt the explosion from his home half a mile away.

Four men were injured in the incident, suffering burns ranging from 16% to 30% of their bodies.
