PHOENIX – The Arizona Department of Liquor Licenses and Control issued a citation to a Tempe bar Thursday.

Varsity Tavern was issued a notice of violation and opportunity to comply by the department.

According to a press release, the bar is under investigation for knowingly allowing employees and managers who tested positive for COVID-19 to continue working and failed to take appropriate measures to notify the Arizona Department of Health Services, employees and customers who came in contact with the workers.

The bar was also cited for failing to enforce social distancing and wearing masks.

Varsity Tavern voluntarily closed Wednesday.

The department is looking to revoke the bar’s liquor license as a result of the violations.

The department also suspended liquor licenses at Life Time Fitness this week for failing to close Rooftop Bistro and Life Café & Lounge in compliance with the state’s orders.

On Monday, Gov. Ducey issued an executive order that mandated bars, gyms, movie theatres, waterparks and tubing operation close until July 27 in order to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

Arizona health officials reported 3,333 new coronavirus cases and 37 deaths Thursday morning, bringing the state’s documented totals to  87,425 COVID-19 cases and 1,757 fatalities.
