Teen driver dies following weekend car crash in East Valley

PHOENIX — A 16-year-old girl died Tuesday afternoon following a vehicle collision that occurred on Saturday in the East Valley, authorities said.

The girl, who was the driver of the car, died from injuries sustained in the crash, according to the Gilbert Police Department.

“Our thoughts are with her family during this difficult time,” Gilbert police said in an announcement. “Two other teens remain hospitalized and are receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.”

On Saturday, officers responded to reports of a single vehicle collision east of Gilbert Road on Williams Field Road just after 10 p.m.

Police said that the occupants of the vehicle included five juveniles, ranging in age from 16 to 17.

According to witnesses, the car was traveling westbound on Williams Field Road before colliding with a tree.

Four of the teens were transported to a nearby hospital with serious and critical injuries. The other juvenile was cleared by the Gilbert Fire Department with minor injuries.

According to Gilbert police, evidence found on scene indicated that alcohol might have been a factor in the crash.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
