PHOENIX – Thanks in part to more than $1 million in federal funding, construction will soon be starting on taxiway improvements at Mesa’s Falcon Field Airport.

Last week, the Mesa City Council awarded the contract on the project to Combs Construction Co.

Work to add two exits to the airport’s north runway will begin in the fall, according to a press release.

The additions, part of an eight-year capital improvement program at Falcon Field, will let planes move off the runway faster and help controllers manage air traffic more efficiently.

“The city continuously plans for upgrades to the airport’s facilities to ensure a pleasant experience for our customers,” Corinne Nystrom, director of Falcon Field, said in the release.

“Part of this experience is being able to land quickly upon entering Falcon Field airspace. These new exits will enable aircraft to move quickly from the runways after landing to accommodate incoming arrivals.”

More than 90% of the project’s costs are being covered by around $1.3 million in Federal Aviation Administration grants.

The city has also applied for an Arizona Department of Transportation grant, and Falcon Field will cover the remaining cost of around $60,000.

“We are fortunate to be awarded this FAA grant funding,” Nystrom said. “We are eager to begin construction with minimal inconvenience to our customers.”

Falcon Field is the nation’s fifth-most active general aviation airport (no scheduled passenger service), according to the release.

It opened in 1941 as a pilot training base and is now used by companies that provide services such as chartered aircraft, recreational flights and flight instruction.

The facility is bordered by McDowell Road to the north, McKellips Road to the south, Greenfield Road to the west and Higley Road to the east.
