2 suspects arrested for deadly incident involving motorcycle gang members in Phoenix

PHOENIX – Two suspects have been arrested in connection with a deadly confrontation among motorcycle gang members near Interstate 17 in Phoenix last month, authorities said.

Nicholas Sheehan, 37, was booked into jail Thursday on counts of first-degree murder, aggravated robbery and assisting a criminal street gang, according to Maricopa County jail records. His bond was set at $1 million.

Additionally, 50-year-old Michael Shane Zavala was arrested out of state and is awaiting extradition, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

Police are planning to request the following charges against Zavala: first-degree murder, second-degree murder, aggravated robbery and assisting in a criminal street gang.

Details of incident that led to arrest of two suspects

One of the victims, 50-year-old Job Martinez, allegedly shot the other, 36-year-old Scott Kikes, during the Nov. 28 incident in the area of Seventh Avenue and I-17. Both had been riding motorcycles.

Zavala allegedly drove his Dodge Charger into Martinez after the shooting.

After they were taken to a hospital, Martinez died of blunt force trauma and Kikes died of a gunshot wound to the head.

Zavala stopped near the scene and later told police he saw people fighting, heard gunshots and sped through the intersection with his head down. He said he hit something but kept going because of the shooting.

He was released after being interviewed, but investigators were later able to develop a case against him. They also determined that the suspects and victims were involved in a fight before the shooting and that Sheehan was in Zavala’s car when it hit Martinez.

Police believe Zavala, Sheehan and Kikes were in the same gang, and Martinez was in a different gang, according to court records.
