Suspect in custody after deadly midday shooting in south Phoenix

PHOENIX – A suspect is in custody after a man was killed in a south Phoenix shooting on Monday afternoon, authorities said.

The alleged shooter, 48-year-old Antonio Lopez Jr., was found hiding behind a trash bin near the shooting scene, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

Officers responded to a shooting call outside a business complex near 24th Street and Baseline Road, not far from South Mountain Community College, around 1:30 p.m.

“Information was provided that an adult male pushing a shopping cart had been shot by another man who had ran west behind the business complex,” Sgt. Lorraine Fernandez said in a media advisory.

The responding officers found 38-year-old Orlando Archuletta suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Archuletta died after being taken to a hospital.

Lopez was located behind the business complex and arrested without incident, police said. He allegedly was in possession of evidence linking him to the shooting.

Lopez was booked into jail on suspicion of second-degree murder and possession of dangerous drugs.

The investigation is ongoing. No other details were made available.
