Suspect identified, officer released from hospital after shooting near Mesa Gateway Airport

PHOENIX – The suspect killed during a shooting incident Wednesday morning near Mesa Gateway Airport has been identified.

According the Mesa Police Department, the suspect was 34-year-old Cameron Oberlin.

In addition, the initial investigation into the shooting reportedly indicates that Oberlin died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

As of Saturday morning, Mesa police said the officer that was injured in the incident has been released from the hospital and is “recovering well and in good spirits.” He sustained a gunshot wound to his right side.

How was Mesa police officer injured?

The incident began with a trespassing call at a private property adjacent to the Mesa Gateway Airport just after 2 a.m. Police said it was a uniformed security guard who called after asking Oberlin to leave.

When responding officers located Oberlin in a parking lot, he was noncompliant and confrontational.

“The man ended up fleeing from our officers. A short time later, we were able to use the Grappler device to immobilize the vehicle,” Detective John Dreyer told reporters during a Wednesday press conference at the scene near Sossaman and Ray roads.

The Grappler is an apparatus mounted on the front bumper of a patrol car that shoots out a heavy-duty nylon net to disable a fleeing vehicle.

With Oberlin’s vehicle unable to move, officers deployed less-lethal weapons in an effort to gain compliance.

“However, he continued to not listen to the officer’s directions. After a short standoff, the man fired rounds from inside of the vehicle toward officers, striking one of them,” Dreyer said.

The wounded officer was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

Other officers at the scene continued trying to get Oberlin to cooperate.

“Eventually, additional less-lethal munitions were deployed. A short time later, after a continued standoff, officers heard a gunshot come from inside the man’s vehicle and he slumped over,” Dreyer said.

Oberlin was pronounced dead at the scene.

Dreyer said multiple officers fired their weapons during the incident.

The Gilbert Police Department is investigating the police shooting as part of the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team.
