Suspect in fatal shooting of Mesa teacher arrested in California

PHOENIX — The suspect in a fatal shooting of a Mesa teacher was arrested in California Saturday morning, according to the Tempe Police Department.

Caleb Bartels, 27, was arrested at 9:08 a.m. by the Susanville California Highway Patrol in Doyle, California. An off-duty officer saw Bartels’ vehicle parked alongside a highway near Doyle, where authorities were able to perform a high risk stop and take him into custody.

California Highway Patrol notified Tempe Police of the arrest. Tempe investigators are preparing to go to California to learn further information about the murder of Ryne Zahner, who was shot and killed on Jan. 15.

Zahner, 26, was found in his backyard near Baseline Road and Mill Avenue in the early morning on Sunday.

He was a math teacher at Mesa High School.

Bartels was booked into the Lassen County Jail in Susanville, California.
