PHOENIX — A suspect died and an officer was injured Thursday following an hourslong standoff in Glendale, authorities said.

Officers were initially called to the scene near 59th and Olive avenues at about 2 a.m. after a woman said her boyfriend was making threats with a gun, the Glendale Police Department said in a press release.

The male, 28-year-old Anthony Hood-Schaffner, was found by officers and began to flee. During the chase, Hood-Schaffner pointed a gun at his head and continued to run, authorities said.

Hood-Schaffner was found in a trailer in the backyard of a nearby residence.

Glendale SWAT responded and negotiated with Hood-Schaffner for several hours, with authorities seeing him holding the gun to his head.

A police dog was sent into the trailer through a window and the officer who handles the dog was struck by gunfire, authorities said.

A SWAT officer returned gunfire, striking and killing Hood-Schaffner, authorities said.

The officer was taken to a hospital with a non-life-threatening injury and has since been released.
