Police shoot man allegedly armed with knife in West Valley

PHOENIX — A man allegedly armed with a knife was shot by police in the West Valley on Thursday morning, authorities said.

The shooting occurred around 6:30 a.m. after officers responded to a 911 call about a man with a knife in the area of 151st Avenue and Cactus Road in Surprise, according to the Surprise Police Department.

Police said the man was taken to a hospital, where he was listed in critical but stable condition.

Shooting was first involving Surprise Police in 2025

No officers were hurt during the first shooting involving Surprise Police this year, a spokesman for the department said.

While there is no ongoing threat to the community, residents were told to expect a police presence in the area for several hours.

The Goodyear Police Department is overseeing the investigation into the shooting as part of the West Valley Investigative Response Team.
