Man who checked in drug-filled suitcase at Phoenix airport sentenced to 5 years

PHOENIX – A man who checked in a suitcase containing drugs at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport last year was sentenced last week to five years in prison, authorities announced.

Jason Kai, 39, previously pleaded guilty to a Class 2 felony of conspiracy to sell or transport a dangerous drug, according to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office (MCAO).

Authorities removed Kai from his flight to Detroit in April 2025 after fentanyl, methamphetamine and heroin were found in his checked bag, prosecutors said.

After Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents noticed something suspicious while they were inspecting Kai’s bag, the Phoenix Police Department searched inside it.

The search uncovered two vacuum-sealed bricks hidden in a box for an inflatable whale sprinkler toy. The powder in one of the bricks tested positive for fentanyl, according to prosecutors.

Further digging revealed 15 pounds of methamphetamine and 1 pound of heroin stashed in the suitcase.

“Countless lives have been saved thanks to the dedicated work of Sky Harbor International Airport’s TSA agents, Phoenix Police detectives and MCAO prosecutors,” County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said in a press release Thursday. “Fentanyl continues to devastate communities across the country. If you plan on trafficking this poison through Maricopa County, plan on staying.”
