West Valley substitute teacher accused of punching 5th grader during class

PHOENIX – A substitute teacher was arrested for allegedly punching a fifth grade student at a West Valley school on Monday, authorities said.

The incident occurred during class at Odyssey Prep Academy near Apache Road and Southern Avenue in Buckeye, according to the Buckeye Police Department.

Sarah Short, 54, allegedly was involved in an argument with a student when she hit the 10-year-old boy in the back, police said.

The alleged assault was reported to the Buckeye Police School Resource Officer assigned to the public charter school.

The substitute teacher left campus before police arrived to investigate, but she was arrested at her home in Goodyear later in the day.

Short was booked into jail on one count of aggravated assault on a minor, a Class 6 felony.
