PHOENIX – Tempe is unveiling new colored lighting on the iconic Hayden Flour Mill silos this week in tribute to the victims of the 9/11 terrorists attacks 24 years ago.
The prominent landmarks on Mill Avenue near Rio Salado Parkway will glow at night with the colors of the American flag Thursday through Sunday to correspond with the annual Tempe Healing Field 9/11 memorial at nearby Tempe Beach Park.
Going forward, the four-story-tall silos will be illuminated in the appropriate colors for a variety of special occasions, including certain holidays and every Arizona State University home football game.
“The Hayden Flour Mill is iconic,” Mayor Corey Woods said in a press release Wednesday. “It represents our history and it’s a point of community pride. Lighting it in beautiful colors is one more way to celebrate our shared experiences.”
