Several highway improvement projects planned for northern Arizona

This year will be a busy year for highway projects in northern Arizona with interstate pavings and highway expansions among some 2019 improvements.

PHOENIX — Arizona drivers can expect to see several improvements to northern Arizona highways this year, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

ADOT announced in a recent press release its newest project to expand the U.S. 93 to a four-lane divided highway between Wickenburg and Interstate 40.

The $35.5 million project will divide and expand nearly 4 miles of the U.S. 93 north of Wikieup, connecting two other parts of the highway that have already been expanded.

This latest expansion is part of a 20-year ADOT project to transform the route between Phoenix and Las Vegas into a four-lane, divided highway.

Only 40 miles are left to be completed out of the 200-mile drive from Wickenburg to Nevada. The project is estimated to be completed in five years.

Other highway improvements include a paving project to repair long-term winter weather damage in the Flagstaff area, according to ADOT.

The project will repair pavement on northbound Interstate 17 between the Coconino County Line and the I-40. Completion is scheduled for late fall 2019.

ADOT also plans to launch a project to repave 13 miles of State Route 89A from Sedona to Pumphouse Wash bridge this spring.

Additionally, the decks of three Virgin River bridges along Interstate 15 in northwest Arizona will be getting resurfaced or replaced starting early this year.
