Scottsdale boosts minimum pay for lifeguards to fill open positions this summer

PHOENIX — The city of Scottsdale announced it is boosting minimum pay for lifeguards and swim instructors during the summer months in an attempt to fill 74 open positions.

The minimum base pay will increase from $12.90 per hour to $14.50 beginning May 22 and lasting through Aug. 27, according to a press release.

“We look forward to hiring incredible lifeguards,” Nick Molinari, Scottsdale parks and recreation director, said in the release.

“Scottsdale is known for its outstanding pools, with a focus on fun and safety. Our certified and trained lifeguards are what make our summers fun and successful. While lifeguarding is a serious job, it’s rewarding and every day is different and exciting. I encourage anyone interested to apply and take a training course. We’d love to have you work with us in Scottsdale.”

Hours at the city’s four pools may be reduced or swim lessons, lap swim and access to the waterparks may be eliminated altogether if needed lifeguard levels are not met, according to the release.

The city said it would reimburse training and certification costs after a lifeguard has worked for 90 days.
