Phoenix scrambling to hire enough lifeguards to open all 29 pools this summer

PHOENIX – A lifeguard shortage could prevent Phoenix from opening all of its municipal pools this summer.

The city said in a press release Wednesday it needs to hire 400 lifeguards to safely open its 29 pools.

Applicants must be at least 15 years old and go through training to be certified by the end of March.

“If we cannot hire the number of lifeguards we need, we cannot open all 29 pools, and that means less people will have access to a pool where they can cool off and less children will learn to swim.” Becky Hulett, the city’s aquatics director, said in the release.

The job pays $14.02 per hour and comes with flexible hours and short commutes. It also looks good on a resume, the city says.

“Being a lifeguard is the best summer job. You’re taught valuable life skills and meet friends that will last a lifetime,” Hulett said.

Candidates must complete StarGuard Training in February and March to be considered. Courses, which have a $20 registration fee, start Feb. 14 and run through March 29.
