2 arrested after assault call escalates into fight with deputies at Salt River

Two people were arrested Sunday evening after Maricopa County sheriff’s deputies responding to an assault call along the Salt River were attacked, authorities said.

Deputies were called to the Mud Cliffs area along the Salt River around 7 p.m. after a woman reported she had been assaulted by another group and held underwater, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office said.

Responding deputies located the victim, who pointed out the suspect and others in her group, the sheriff’s office said.

As deputies were interviewing the suspect, Beyonce Burruel and Dario Burruel hindered the investigation and began fighting with deputies, authorities said. Several deputies suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the scuffle.

Beyonce Burruel was booked on charges of assault and aggravated assault to impede breathing, the sheriff’s office said. Dario Burruel was booked on a charge of aggravated assault on a first responder.

The arrests came during a deadly Memorial Day weekend along the Salt River, where authorities said two men, 22-year-old Sahr Sewah and 23-year-old Jason Blake Jr., died in separate drowning incidents.
