Driver suspected of DUI after man trying to access sewer line dies in work vehicle

PHOENIX — A man in a work vehicle was killed in a collision involving a driver suspected of DUI on Tuesday night, authorities said.

Yusuf Munir, 54, was in the back of his work truck, which was stopped in the roadway near 32nd and Grand avenues before the crash, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

There were emergency cones around the area where Munir was accessing a sewer line, which designated the space his vehicle was in as a work area.

After a truck driver crashed into the work truck Munir was in, Phoenix police officers responded to the scene around 10:50 a.m.

They found Munir inside his work truck with serious injuries.

Medical personnel with the Phoenix Fire Department brought Munir to a hospital. He died there from his injuries.

The driver of the truck that struck Munir’s vehicle stayed on the scene and received medical care.

He was later taken to a hospital, where officers noticed he was showing signs of intoxication, police said. The driver was processed for DUI.

Authorities will decide which charges the driver will face after the investigation is completed.
