Rawr! Phoenix Zoo to kick off Dinosaurs in the Desert exhibit

PHOENIX — The Valley will be going back in time to the Prehistoric Era next week, when the Phoenix Zoo will kick off its six-month Dinosaurs in the Desert exhibit.

The Dinosaurs in the Desert exhibit will be a self-guided expedition involving 23 life-sized prehistoric creatures — 17 of which are animatronic.

According to Bert Castro, president and CEO of the Phoenix Zoo, the exhibit will include the Brachiosaurus, Stegosaurus and — of course — the ubiquitous Tyrannosaurus Rex. They will all be placed on the Desert Lives trail, Castro added.

“All of the other zoo inhabitants, all the animals — although quite curious — seem quite comfortable with the new additions,” he said.

The exhibit kicks off on Oct. 6 and will run until April 20, 2018. Tickets for the exhibit will also go on sale on Oct. 6.

The grand opening will feature an interactive fossil dig, dinosaur artifacts and a pair of realistic dinosaurs that will run around and interact with the children. The celebration will be $4 for members and $5 for non-members.

Phoenix Zoo members will be granted early access to the exhibit from Oct. 3 through 5 for free by showing their membership card.
