PHOENIX — Animals waiting to find their forever homes at a Phoenix shelter celebrated Thanksgiving over the weekend with a furry feast.
Bashas’ supplied the ingredients for a smorgasbord of holiday-themed treats for more than 150 potential pets at the Arizona Humane Society’s Rob and Melani Walton Papago Park Campus.
The dishes were prepared by a group of AHS donors and volunteers. The menu consisted of snacks and toys that pet owners can make at home as part of their Thanksgiving celebrations:
- Thanksgiving Kongs: Sturdy rubber chew toys filled with dog food, turkey and green beans.
- Peanut butter pies: Peanut butter spread between two dog biscuits.
- Candy apples: Cored apples covered in peanut butter and cheerios.
- Deviled eggs: Plastic eggs filled with dog treats.
- Turkey bark: Turkey and green bean pieces frozen in an ice cube.
- Kitty curlicues: A pipe cleaner wrapped around a pencil, a favorite shelter cat toy.
AHS is currently caring for around 1,100 dogs, cats and other critters who are undergoing medical treatment or are ready to be adopted.
