Phoenix sets daily record high temperature at 102 degrees

PHOENIX — Summer may not officially start for a couple more months, but Phoenix didn’t get the memo.

Phoenix reached 102 degrees at Phoenix Sky Harbor around 4:45 p.m. on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

The previous record high was set in 1898 when the temperature reached 101 degrees.

Yuma also tied its daily record high temperature of 104 degrees.

Sunday also marked the first time in 2020 that Phoenix temperatures reached triple digits. Around 1:45 p.m., NWS reported the temperature at 100 degrees.

“This is what we’re headed into for the summer,” ABC15 Meteorologist Iris Hermosillo told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Friday.

“We’re going to see more of this. It’s just especially difficult this year because we’re not quite ready for it and acclimated for it.”

Phoenix hit 100 for the first time last year on April 26 and last saw triple digits 220 days ago on Sept. 19, 2019.

An excessive heat watch was scheduled to go into effect for the Valley at 10 a.m.

The forecast high for Phoenix on Sunday is 103 degrees.
