Phoenix receives $198 million from coronavirus relief bill for transit costs

PHOENIX – Phoenix will receive nearly $200 million to help with transportation costs during the coronavirus outbreak.

The city will receive $198 million of the $25 billion set aside for transportation in the United States in the coronavirus relief package.

“We know many of our nation’s public transportation systems are facing extraordinary challenges and these funds will go a long way to assisting our transit industry partners in battling COVID-19,” FTA Acting Administrator K. Jane Williams said in a press release.

Phoenix will use the funds to cover expenses for Valley Metro’s bus, light rail and paratransit services.

It will also be used to cover expenses for the city of Phoenix Public Transit Department.

The FTA issued a safety advisory that requires transit agencies to develop polices and procedures for face coverings, cleaning high touch surfaces, physical distancing and hand hygiene.

The grant can be used to cover 100% of the costs related to these requirements.
