Phoenix police release video of armed robbery suspect being arrested

PHOENIX — The Phoenix Police Department released video footage of officers arresting a suspect in connection to an armed robbery case at a Phoenix hotel earlier this month.

Police were called to a hotel near 48th Avenue and McDowell Road around 3:15 p.m. on June 7 regarding reports of armed robbery, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

The video that police released of the incident includes video of the suspect stealing a hotel worker’s purse, audio from the 911 call, surveillance footage outside the hotel, surveillance footage of the suspect walking into a gas station with the bag and police body cam footage of the arrest.

Details on the armed robbery and the suspect’s arrest

A housekeeper at the hotel called 911 and said she witnessed a man steal her purse from the hotel’s laundry room, adding that when she confronted him about it he pulled out a handgun and pointed it at her.

She described the man as a Hispanic male, in his 20s, wearing black clothing and a black hat with yellow writing.

Officers shared a photo of the suspect that a witness had taken, as well as his description, with other officers.

Approximately an hour later, officers saw a man matching the suspect’s description near a gas station on 43rd Avenue and McDowell Road. They then witnessed the man enter the store with the stolen purse.

Police attempted to stop the suspect when he left the store and the suspect ran out of the gas station and onto McDowell Road.

Officers followed in their patrol vehicle and as they got close saw the man reach into his shorts for the gun. In response, the officer driving struck the man with the patrol vehicle.

Following the collision, the man’s ankle was pinned under the front passenger tire of the patrol vehicle. Officers moved the car to free the man’s ankle.

Police did find a gun on the suspect that matched the one seen in surveillance footage.

The man was taken to the hospital for a non-life-threatening injury to his ankle.

Phoenix PD said the suspect was to be booked into jail following his release from the hospital.

No one else was injured during the incident.

The officer involved is from the Maryvale-Estrella Mountain Precinct and has been with the department for six years.

The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office has taken over the investigation into the armed robbery case. An administrative investigation is also being done.
