PHOENIX – A Phoenix police officer shot a man wielding knives during a domestic violence incident at a mobile home park on Monday night, authorities said.
Officers responded to a call about a man arguing with his mother in the area of 21st Street and Union Hills Drive around 11 p.m., according to the Phoenix Police Department.
A man and a woman told them that 55-year-old Abraham Hermosillo was inside and could have a knife.
“Officers entered the home and found Hermosillo inside and armed with two knives. His mother retreated to the living room. Officers ordered Hermosillo to drop the knives, but he continued to hold on to them,” Sgt. Phil Krynsky said in a media advisory.
What prompted Phoenix police officer to shoot man?
When Hermosillo moved toward the living room, one of the officers shot him.
He dropped the knives after getting shot but didn’t heed directions to put his hands behind his back, so officers used what police called a “less-lethal tool” to subdue him.
Hermosillo was taken to a hospital to be treated for a gunshot wound and released into police custody.
He will be booked into jail on multiple felony charges, police said.
The investigation is ongoing.
