Phoenix police officer shoots, kills man who allegedly pointed gun at him

PHOENIX — A Phoenix police officer shot and killed a man Saturday night after the man allegedly pointed a gun at the officer.

Police said they responded to a domestic violence call around 7 p.m. near 32nd Street and McDowell Road, where a woman said she was involved in a physical altercation with Eric Hagstrom, 35.

Hagstrom allegedly left the scene in the woman’s car and was involved in a collision a few blocks away.

Police were called to the collision scene and found the vehicle, but Hagstrom had fled.

Minutes later, police were called to a home near 40th Street and Thomas Road where a witness told officers that Hagstrom was lying down in a driveway with a gun.

Police said a 30-year-old male officer contacted Hogstram and told him to drop the weapon.

Hagstrom allegedly pointed the gun at the officer, and the officer shot him.

Hagstrom was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.

Police said a gun was located at the scene where the officer had found Hagstrom, and the investigation is ongoing.

The officer was later identified as Steven Hawes, who has been on the force for 1½ years.

It was the third shooting involving a Phoenix officer this year, and the eighth officer-involved shooting in the Valley.

Last year, Phoenix recorded 44 officer-involved shootings, an agency high.
