Phoenix Police fatally shoot stabbing suspect who allegedly refused to drop knife

PHOENIX — A Phoenix Police officer fatally shot a man Monday afternoon who allegedly stabbed a woman and refused to drop the knife, authorities said.

The incident occurred near 30th Avenue and McDowell Road at about 1:20 p.m. when officers responded to a call about a woman being stabbed, the Phoenix Police Department said in a press conference.

Officers arrived on the scene and were directed to a man in front of a residence, later identified as 30-year-old Emilio Chamizo, who authorities noticed had a knife in his hand.

Police said Chamizo refused orders to put the knife down, leading an officer to shoot him.

Chamizo was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

Police said the woman who was stabbed was also taken to the hospital, where she was in critical but stable condition and expected to survive.

An investigation into the incident is in its early stages but police said it is believed Chamizo and the woman were known to each other.

The officer who shot Chamizo has been placed on administrative leave as is the policy with an officer-involved shooting, police said.

No other information was available.

It was the fourth shooting of 2022 involving Phoenix police and seventh in the Valley, according to KTAR News 92.3 FM tracking.
