Phoenix police release body camera video of fatal shooting of wanted sex crimes suspect

The Phoenix Police Department released body camera footage showing two officers fatally shooting a man wanted on child sex crime charges last month.

James Glenn, 56, was killed June 11 near 23rd Avenue and Pinnacle Peak Road after officers with the department’s Tactical Support Bureau tried to arrest him on a felony warrant tied to alleged sexual conduct with a minor, police said.

According to the department’s critical incident briefing, officers spotted Glenn’s car and started following him. When he didn’t immediately stop, a K-9 unit officer used a tool called a grappler to stop Glenn’s SUV.

Another officer used his truck to pin Glenn’s door shut.

While still in the vehicle, Glenn raised a handgun and pointed it at officers, police said. One officer fired his handgun and a second officer fired a shotgun, both striking Glenn. The video shows the weapons being fired but neither of the released body worn camera footage recorded audio of the shooting itself or Glenn raising a handgun.

Officers then fired a less-lethal foam rubber round to confirm it was safe to approach before taking Glenn into custody and rendering medical aid. Phoenix Fire personnel responded and pronounced him dead at the scene.

Police also released a drone photograph showing a handgun inside Glenn’s vehicle.

No officers were injured.

The two officers involved are assigned to the Fugitive Apprehension and Investigation Detail and the K-9 Unit. They were not identified in the Phoenix Police briefing.

What happens next?

The Arizona Department of Public Safety is conducting the criminal investigation, which will be reviewed by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.

Phoenix police are conducting a separate internal review.
