Man hospitalized after 2nd shooting of day involving Phoenix police officers

PHOENIX — A man sustained injuries that aren’t considered life-threatening Thursday night in the day’s second shooting involving the Phoenix Police Department, authorities said.

The shooting took place outside a fast food restaurant near 16th Street and Buckeye Road. It was the eighth Phoenix police shooting over the past six weeks.

Officers responded to the scene around 6:45 p.m. after a 911 caller described what appeared to be a woman being robbed at gunpoint.

They found a man outside the restaurant matching the description provided of the robbery suspect and ordered him to lie on the ground.

The man initially complied just outside the doors of the restaurant before jumping to his feet, prompting an officer to shoot him with his duty rifle.

The Phoenix Fire Department transported that man to a hospital. Police initially said on social media the suspect sustained serious injuries. A media advisory issued later said the injuries were not life-threatening.

The initial investigation found no gun at the scene, police said.

No officers were injured during the incident, which is being investigated by the Arizona Department of Public Safety’s Major Incident Division.

Second shooting involving Phoenix police officers in one day

Thursday’s first Phoenix police shooting took place around 8 a.m. in the area of Seventh Street and Sunland Avenue, north of Southern Avenue.

A man was hospitalized with serious injuries after he was shot by officers responding to call about a person armed with a knife making suicidal statements.

On Wednesday, new Phoenix Police Chief Matt Giordano posted a list of actions the department is taking in response to the surge in critical incidents.
