Pedestrian hit, killed by SUV while crossing street in northwest Phoenix

A pedestrian is dead after being hit by an SUV while crossing a street outside of a crosswalk in northwest Phoenix on Monday night, authorities said.

The Phoenix Police Department identified 67-year-old Santiago Bernardo Ramirez as the man killed.

Officers responded to a collision call in the area of 39th Avenue and Thunderbird Road around 8:50 p.m. and found Ramirez in extremely critical condition. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Detectives determined that Ramirez was crossing Thunderbird Road midblock when he was struck by a 2015 Dodge Journey that was driving eastbound.

The driver remained at the scene and showed no signs of impairment. Speed is also not considered to be a factor and charges are not being recommended in the fatal north Phoenix collision, police said.
