Phoenix officer indicted after allegedly going 50 mph above speed limit before crash while on duty

PHOENIX — A Phoenix police officer is facing criminal charges after a rollover crash that injured three people, including the officer, earlier this year, authorities announced Wednesday.

The officer identified on Nov. 26 as Joshua Allen Woodcock, who was on duty, was allegedly going 50 mph above the speed limit before the crash, which happened in the early morning hours of March 14, near the Interstate 17 access road and Buckeye Road, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

After an internal investigation, the department said it turned over its findings to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.

The case was then presented to a grand jury, which indicted the officer on four counts of aggravated assault and endangerment.

“This is a serious matter,” Phoenix Sgt. Lorraine Fernandez said in a media advisory. “Our officers are expected to uphold the same laws they enforce, and when standards are not met, we have an obligation to act.”

Details of crash that led to charges against Phoenix officer

In March, the Phoenix Police Department said one of its patrol SUVs collided with another vehicle.

The SUV was headed west on Buckeye Road when it hit a car that was turning left from eastbound Buckeye Road.

The crash caused the patrol vehicle to roll and left three people, including the officer, with non-life-threatening injuries.

Impairment was found not to be a factor in the crash.
