Suspect charged in deadly Phoenix shooting allegedly sparked by argument

A Phoenix man has been charged with the shooting and killing of another man during an argument in west Phoenix last week.

Luis Antonio Garcia was booked on charges of second-degree murder and possession of a weapon by a prohibited possessor in the May 20 death of 48-year-old Joshua Fernandez, according to court records.

Phoenix Police Department officers responded to reports of a shooting near McDowell Road and 59th Avenue shortly after 2:15 p.m. A caller told dispatchers they heard two gunshots and saw a man lying on the ground, police said.

Officers found Fernandez in the roadway with at least one gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Witnesses told investigators that Fernandez and Garcia had been arguing when Garcia pulled out a gun, shot Fernandez and left the area in a gray car, according to police.

Detectives later tracked Garcia to a Sun Valley residence and set up surveillance. They spotted Garcia getting into a black Dodge Caravan and tried to pull him over as he drove west on Interstate 10, police said. Garcia tried to flee but crashed into a median, then ran from the vehicle before officers caught and arrested him.

Garcia’s bond was set at $1.5 million. The investigation is ongoing.
