Phoenix police arrest man in April homicide on murder and felony narcotics possession

A 26-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting last month in north Phoenix, police said.

Andrew Castanon-Espitia was booked on one count of murder and felony narcotics possession in the death of 37-year-old Cheyenne Richard Amestoy, according to a Phoenix Police Department news release.

Officers responded around 2:30 a.m. on April 14 to a report of a shooting in a home near Cave Creek Road and Sweetwater Avenue, police said.

They found an adult man with a gunshot wound, who was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

While police initially had a hard time finding a suspect, over the next month, homicide detectives gathered enough evidence to arrest Castanon-Espitia, according to the release.

On May 12, detectives arrested Castanon-Espitia in Cave Creek in a traffic stop. During the stop, he was also found in possession of a large quantity of illicit drugs, according to the release.

He is being kept on $1 million bond.
